More traditonal music listening online

Just a note, that I will not be doing the folk show this summer. Thanks for listening for the last two years. I recommend Folk Alley (WKSU), Bluegrass Country (WAMU), Radio nan Gaidheal (BBC Gaelic Radio), or Bloomington's very own WFHB for traditional musics from here and around the world. Tune in to WIUS in the fall for Jeff Cannon's FOLK FROM THE HEARTLAND every Sunday evening.

I might continue using this blog for more information on this type of music, but more as a linking and review service. LOL, that might be ambitious, but we'll see.

If any one is interested in my other interests of audio preservation and film & video preservation, check out these blogs too.

Thanks for listening "by and by"

Kitchen Party April 10

Tonight on the Kitchen Party...

The first hour will feature a story by G.D. McNeel called "The First Camp Fire" from a radio special called "The Last Forest: Tales of the Allegheny Woods." According to the notes, this story tells of G.D.'s first fishing trip across the mountains [in his West Virginia home] to the Cranberry River Wilderness.

Then we'll have music. Enjoy all the sounds of the many traditions on "The Kitchen Party."

Kitchen Party- this weekend

Welcome back everyone:

I should say I'm glad to be back. Because it's Easter Sunday and my parents are in town, I'm only doing a one-hour show Sunday night. I have some new stuff to play, but I think I'll try to include some Sephardic music for Passover, plus some hymns, gospel, and shape-note singing for Easter.

Tune in at 8 pm tomorrow night!

News about Stan Rogers

I'm passing along this news about the late Canadian folksinger Stan Roger's quintessentially-Canadian song "Northwest Passage":

Hi all...Stan Rogers' classic song NORTHWEST PASSAGE was just yesterday voted the #1 song of the first round of the 1980's in CBC Radio's 50 Tracks: the 50 most important Canadian pop songs (hosted by Jian Ghomeshi).

You can hear Jian's pitch for the song here:

You can watch a short clip of Stan singing it here.

And of course you can peruse the whole site.

What is 50 Tracks? From the CBC website:

50 Tracks is back and we are on a quest to come up with a great list of the 50 most important Canadian pop songs.

Host Jian Ghomeshi will once again bring together panels of celebrities, pop culture specialists and people in the know to nominate their choices for definitive Canadian pop songs. The choices are bound to be controversial and hotly debated by the panelists and, more importantly, by our audience. What should be on the list? What shouldn't be? The audience will add their 10 top picks and, ultimately decide which song will be #1!

50 Tracks is all about creating the list. It is about the choices and the debate that go into making that list. It's about getting involved and fighting for your favourites in a spirit of fun and friendly competition. It's about discovering, and celebrating Canadian pop music and the people who make it.
